Products & Use

How do I use herbal body oil?

There’s no wrong way to use herbal body oil. Massage it onto your skin anywhere that feels right-  your neck, shoulders, feet, or all over. Many people use it in the morning to wake up the senses and set a calm & present tone for the day, or in the evening to wind down.

Will herbal body oil make my skin feel greasy?

No, it's better described as silky and nourishing. A little goes a long way, and it absorbs quickly into the skin.

How do I keep oil from getting on my clothes after applying it?

Give the oil a few minutes to absorb before getting dressed, or use a dedicated "oil robe" or set of sheets you don't mind getting a little oily if you're fully oiling before bed. You can also oil just before or in the shower (although many people love to oil just after the shower when the pores are more open!)

Are oils safe to use during pregnancy?

St. John's Wort oil is our most-recommended oil for the entire childbearing spectrum and is widely used during all stages of pregnancy.

Can I use these oils on my kids?

Yes! Kids often love them, especially during transition moments like coming home from school or winding down before bed. Many parents say their kids start asking for it themselves.

What's the difference between body oil, essential oil, and essence?

To make body oil, whole-plant herbs are slow-infused into a carrier oil and applied generously to the skin for nourishment and relaxation. Essential oils are highly concentrated, usually steam-distilled extracts used in tiny diluted amounts. Essences are gentler preparations taken internally, working on a more subtle level. Read the full comparison in our "What Are Essences" article.

How should I take the elixirs? Do I need to mix them with water?

We add honey to our elixirs, so you can take a dropperful directly without needing to find a glass of water. It's designed to be one less step in a busy day.

Sourcing & Quality

Where do your herbs come from? Are they organic?

We grow many of our herbs organically at home. For herbs we can’t grow at home, we ethically wildcraft them from wild stands we know and monitor year after year, so they come back stronger each season. The only things we buy elsewhere are tropical plants that literally can't grow in our area, and we always buy organic.

Who makes Mythic Medicine products?

Our founder, Amber Magnolia Hill, and her husband Owen make every product by hand in small batches with herbs they grow or wildcraft.

Are you a certified herbalist?

There's no single formal certification for herbalism. Amber has been studying and practicing since 2005, including two herbal apprenticeships.

How do you make your products?

We slow-infuse our herbs, rather than relying on heat or faster extraction methods. We use different extraction techniques for each plant to get the most medicine out of each one. Every batch is made and tested by our own family before it's offered to you, and we have been sharing our products with the public since 2012.

Wellness & Life Transitions

Can herbal medicine actually help with burnout, or is that just marketing?

Herbal medicine won't fix the root causes of burnout, but it can genuinely support your nervous system and help you find small, real moments of relief. Many of our customers use these products as part of reclaiming stolen moments of self-care. For a deeper dive into true burnout, check out Amber’s podcast, Medicine Stories.

I'm exhausted and overwhelmed. Where do I even start?

Start small- a five-minute body oil on your neck, shoulders, and feet can help reset your nervous system without adding to your to-do list. Our Herbal Support for Burnt-Out Mothers guide has more ideas to help if you’re short on time.

What do you recommend for perimenopause symptoms?

Many women find herbal body oils and elixirs supportive during perimenopause, especially for sleep, mood, and overall nervous system balance. We recommend starting with the Perimenopause and Menopause Support Rites of Passage Bundle.
